June 9, 2002

Walk of Honor

Harrisville Firefighter's Memorial Park Walk of FameFirefighters Memorial Park will have a Walk of Honor. This walk will consist of inscribed bricks that have been donated by the general public in honor of deceased firefighters. Bricks may be purchased with respects to firefighters in general or in memory of a loved one. A new drive will be conducted each year and will conclude on March 1 of that calendar year.

Every day firefighters are called upon to protect the communities they serve. Whether it be fire, haz-mat, medical emergencies or acts of terrorism, firefighters are our first responders. Firefighting continues to be one of the most dangerous jobs in America and throughout the world. Each year many brave men and women of the fire and rescue services die in the line of duty while answering the call to protect their fellow citizens.
In 2000, the Burrillville Town Council voted to designate a newly proposed park as "Firefighters Memorial Park" in honor of firefighters everywhere. Construction began in 2001 and was completed in 2002. A six foot granite memorial, adorned with a maltese cross and a bronzed memorial tablet is the park's main memorial. Two smaller tablets are located at each entrance to the park; one with the Firefighters Prayer and the other with a Firefighters Poem.
Various plantings are located in the center island, where American and fire service flags fly everyday. The Walk of Honor will be lined with bricks honoring loved ones who have served in the fire and rescue services. The park is handicapped accessible and benches are located along the walkway.

The park is located at the intersection of Callahan School Street and Sherman Farm Road (Routes 96 & 98), across from the fire station in the historic village of Harrisville.

Walk of Honor flyers are available at your local fire department or post office.
